Keeping your child busy in the winter.

During the cold winter months, your child may become restless as they are cooped up in the house more than usual. You can keep them busy with some fun indoor activities! Art and Crafts are a great and creative way to spend some time. Together, you and your child can make some homemade playdough. Once it is made, you child can play with the dough for hours. Baking cookies is also a really fun activity that both you and your child can enjoy doing together. They can help measure and pour in all the ingredients, stir the batter, and place it on the cookie sheet. 8-10 minutes later, they can enjoy the cookie they just made!

If your child wants to play outside in the snow, let them! Make sure and bundle them up in several thin layers of clothing and have them wear mittens and a hat. Go outside with them and help them build a snowman and make snow angels. These will create ever-lasting memories for your child.

Playdough Recipe
4 cups flour
1/4 cup powdered tempera
1/4 cup salt
1 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon oil

Mix together flour, powdered paint and salt. Mix water and oil, and food coloring if desired. Gradually stir the water and oil mix into the flour mix. Knead the playdough as you add the liquid. Add more water if too stiff, more flour if sticky.

That Time of Year Again

Well, it’s that time of year yet again. Parents are waiting anxiously, getting a bigger smile with every day crossed off the calendar. Kids are groaning and dreading the approaching day. You’ve probably guessed it - time to get ready to back to school!
As parents we know how important a good education is, but often overlooked is the crucial role technology now plays in school. Kids are introduced as early as Kindergarten to the basics of computers. This early exposure is important as technology plays such a role in our society now, and will only continue to grow in its’ role. As a teacher myself, I know the effort that school districts are making to include technology in their curriculum.

1. Go to a matinee movie - bring healthy snacks from the produce section
2. Rent a children's movie and invite a friend or two over
3. Go to the craft store and pick out some materials for a fun project
4. Get some friends to meet you for pizza at the local pizza shop bring a fun game with you to play
5. Go to the zoo or aquarium with a book from the library and learn fun facts about animals

Rainy Day Activities for Kids

Well spring for alot of us seems further away than we would like. We have noticed around the U.S. some people are even getting snow. So we thought it might be good to share some fun rainy day activities.

Fun inexpensive rainy day activities:

Coloring books - pick a few pages and color, put them on the fridge
Finger painting - fun and creative, get those creative juices flowing!
Make home made play dough - use food coloring and create fun sculptures
Build a blanket tent and read stories - Always fun at night bring a flashlight and make popcorn)
Pick out a set of board games and create a tournament (the winner gets candy, ok everyone gets candy)

Fun Spring Activities

With Spring almost here it is fun to get the kids outside and having fun. It's nice to take advantage of the weather daylight saving time. If you are into gardening, get your kids involved! They will love seeing the fruits of their labor and it gives them a sense of responsibility. If you have a local basketball court or hoop around gather the family and shoot some hoops. If you have a trail close by try picking out a book at a library, then take a walk on the trail and identify some native plants and trees.

It's fun, educational and is a great way to get kids away from video games, computer and TV.

Other Activities

Scavenger Hunt (hide some fun items and leave clues around the yard for kids to find the prize)
Pack a picnic and go to a place that you would normally go to during the summer.
Hide and Seek (always a blast)
Go to the lake or river and plan a future summer time event
Pick up litter on a street or area near you
Take a bike ride

KidsDesk.net Valentines Cupcakes

Ingredients you will need:

Cake Mix
Frosting (Pink, Red or White)
Cinnamon Hearts (Candy)
Foil
Cupcake pan
Paper cupcake cups

To Prepare:

Make your cupcake mix according to the directions on the box. Then pour the mix into cupcake cups in the cupcake pan. Roll little pieces of tinfoil into a little ball about the size of a marble. Put one foil ball on the side of every cupcake, between the pan and the paper cupcake cup.

This recipe makes the heart shape as the cupcake cooks. Finally you add the Frosting of your choice and decorate with cinnamon heart candies! Now enjoy and Happy Valentine's from the KidsDesk.net Team.
